Proofminder is a fast-growing AI startup in the agriculture domain. They help growers with cutting-edge technologies to grow better food with confidence and meet production goals sustainably.
The Challenge
Proofminder turned to us with two major objectives. First of all, addressing the quick and unstable solutions that had been implemented under time pressure. Secondly, to streamline their architecture to support scaling and enable multi-cloud capabilities.
Even though the original challenge they reached out for was not cost-optimization, in the matter of 2 weeks we realized how much money is going down the drain because of an improperly designed architecture. We talked about it with their leadership team and they gave us the green light to optimize their cloud costs.
Solution
Proofminder's key component is their AI model. It would be easy to assume that their most cost-intensive infrastructure element was the GPU compute instances they used to train and run their AI model on.
It wasn't. After reviewing their bill and infrastructure setup we soon realized they had a fundamental flaw in their networking.
Their business model heavily relies on Amazon S3 to store petabytes (PB) of data from their customers. Due to the poorly designed networking setup they had, they were continuously paying for egress traffic from S3 when their processing retrieved the data from their buckets and also incurred significant costs on their NAT Gateways.
After realizing how bad their networking was, we proposed to fix it right away instead of handing over our cost-optimization report for later execution since they were burning money very quickly on networking.
The adjustments we proposed reduced their overall cloud costs to just 35% of the initial expenditure.
Results
As an immediate result of our review, Proofminder's AWS costs were reduced by 65%. The savings could be immediately reinvested into their company, which, for a startup is critical.
